When people approach me, clients approach me, and I get approached in the gym all the time. What are the most important supplements? You know, what should I be taking? I think there’s very few supplements that are really going to have a serious anabolic effect on the body, in the sense that these are must have supplements. In other words, you know, your body’s not going to grow without them. Honestly, most supplements out there, muscle growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Muscle growth happens because your body, and your internal environment, is ripe for growth. It’s recovering. It’s been given the proper overload. The muscles have been damaged to the point where it’s going to grow, to recover, become bigger and stronger. Much like blowing up a big balloon. Or stretching a rubber band. And so and so forth. It’s going to come back bigger.

And most of these supplements are in any, or any one given area of the body, or of the endocrine system, or the hormonal system. And that in and of itself doesn’t make it necessary. What’s necessary are some of the basic supplements that we know work. That would be a very good, high quality protein powder. A good, high quality, fast acting carbohydrate powder. Hydrosemic carbohydrate powder. Branch chain amino acids. Creatine. And then quite possibly glutamate. The only other supplement that you may want to throw into the mix if you’re not, you don’t have any adverse reactions to caffeine, is pure caffeine capsules.

But having those four to five supplements as your staple of your body building program, just those alone. If you’re training properly, and with the right intensity, and hard enough, you’re going to see gains.

One of the things that I get a lot of questions about are protein bars and there’s a lot of protein bars on the market. Some of them are nothing more than glorified candy bars because they’re devoid of some of the necessary nutrients.

But in fact, a good quality protein bar can be a great resource to have as a meal replacement even in some cases and, depending upon the nutritional profile of the protein bar, you can get the calories that your body needs as well. They come in different sizes. This protein bar here is a big protein bar. You’ve got probably almost 400 calories in just this one bar. And that’s a bit too much for some so you might to even break that bar into two but they come in smaller sizes.

The key with protein bars is to remember that it’s a way for you to give your body a quick amount of protein and hopefully, possibly some fiber because not all bars are created equal. Some protein bars are just filled with way too much sugar and in some cases even a lot of fruit juice and fructose. Fructose is going to hinder your body’s ability to burn fat properly.

So look at the ingredients of the protein bar and make sure there’s adequate amounts of protein in it. It should be at least anywhere from 15 to 20 grams of protein depending upon how many of these bars you’re going to have and how you’re going utilize them, you might be able to get away with less than that, but you want to make sure there’s also some good, a few grams of fiber at least in there.

A lot of these bars are using different types of carbs. They’re called net carbs. They use what’s called sugar alcohol which is a carbohydrate source that’s suppose to not have a negligible impact on your blood sugar therefore they don’t’ cause insulin swings. So you can kind of use these protein bars not only throughout the day as a meal replacement and get some added protein but you can also use them later on at night or after dinner if you want something sweet to eat. So the jury’s still out on the sugar alcohol or whether or not they really, truly do have any impact on your blood sugar. In most cases I would say, most people or most clients that I have worked with don’t have a problem digesting them. Although, because of some of the sugar alcohol that are in them, they do sometimes tend to cause a little bit of a stomach disturbance.

So you want to try them, see which one’s work best for you. Make sure the bar’s got protein, adequate protein rather. Make sure the bar’s got low in sugar and make sure it’s got some fiber and you’ll do good with utilizing these protein bars.

We live in a society where we’re told we’re carboholics and we’re carb addicts, and that carbs are bad for you. But the fact of the matter is there are different types of carbs. There are good carbs and there are bad carbs. But bad carbs will be those carbs that are processed, potato chips and cookies and cakes, and so on and so forth. Healthy carbs will be those complex carbohydrates that your body’s going to digest at a much slower rate. They’re going to help your carbohydrate scores to be fuller at a much gradual rate, after ingesting them. They would be oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes and so on and so forth and yams. These are healthy carbs. But then, you also want to consider a fast-acting carb, when you’re post workout or even pre-workout. Meaning that, you can administer fast-acting carbs like a dextrose or a simple sugar or a multodextrin drink or beverage. Maybe 30 minutes or so before you work out, and then even immediately right after. Because your body’s going to be extremely ripe and ready to utilize those carbohydrates for replenishment to replenish your calitrogen scores and aid you in recovery. So, you want to make sure that you’re ingesting basically mostly complex carbohydrates. And you’re keeping the simple carbs, which would be more the higher sugar carbs like even fruit juices and so on for times before and after your workout. And you – one would even say during your workout, but specifically before and after your workout. Try not to ingest simple carbohydrates late at night. You’re not – your body doesn’t respond the same way after 5:00, 6:00 p.m. I think it’s more realistic to say for most people that you know you wanna – you wanna – probably you’re last meal’s gonna come around 6:00 or 7:00, and even that’s some times hard. But you wanna – you want to try not to eat carbs after 8:00 p.m. at night and if you do, keep them complex. Keep your simple carbs usually based around your workout. So, if you follow those guidelines, you’re gonna do extremely well with how your body utilizes the carbs.
